Here your conscience
and your corpus can be at peace. The principles are ‘eco’
and ‘low impact’, rooted in a deep concern for the local
heritage and the damaging effects that tourism can have. Ramesh,
the pioneer, lives here with his extended family, the sounds and
smells of their lives providing a gentle backdrop to this beautiful
setting. The rooms are a cluster of traditional huts with mud-rubbed
walls, thatched roofs and ruddy, earthy colours. Wooden furniture
and intriguing objets in russet-toned alcoves create an understated,
minimalist feel. Everything you need is here, though luxuries are
few. The bathrooms are all gleaming white tiles and polished chrome;you’ll
get no better at this price, anywhere. Seasonal, wholesome food
is doled out on leaf plates under a bougainvillea-clad pagoda in
the circular, crazy-paved courtyard that is the hub of the place.
Ramesh is a pleasant, well-travelled man of principle, who believes
strongly in the importance of harmonious living. Superb cafetière
coffee! Guided excursions to Shekhawati towns and villages. Great
trekking. Ramesh has founded the ‘Friends of Shekhawati’
to preserve the disappearing local heritage. Apani Dhani
or eco farm. Here Ramesh has implimented his various experiments
in alternative energies, such as solar water heaters, bio gas and
solar cookers. Rooms are decorated in traditional styles and have
thatched roofs and mud plaster. Singles/doubles with attached bath.
The farm has buffaloes, cows and goats, the manure from which is
used on the vegie garden. Ramesh is actively involved in the preservation
of Shekhawati's havelis and has initiated educational programmes
to raise local awareness about the rich cultural legacy they represent.
He is the best source of information on Nawalgarh and its painted
